Biography

Born in Hong Kong, saxophonist/ singer/ songwriter Cherry Ng moved to Vancouver, Canada at the age of 6 and began studying classical piano. As a young child, she excelled in music, achieving numerous awards for her abilities on the piano. Cherry picked up the clarinet at age 11 and took up the alto saxophone at age 13. During her high school years, she studied with various instructors in the classical and jazz saxophone idiom, and taught herself how to play the electric bass. At the age of 17, Cherry went on tour with a local wind symphony and performed in various parts of Italy.

Upon graduating high school, Cherry continued her musical studies at Capilano College in North Vancouver, where she received a 2-year diploma and a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies, majoring in Performance and Education. As a student at Capilano College, Cherry played lead tenor and alto sax in the prestigious A-Band for three years, and was lucky enough to have shared the stage with legendary jazz pianist Cedar Walton, Grammy- nominated vocalist Kurt Elling, saxophonist Seamus Blake, drummer Ed Thigpen, clarinetist/ arranger Phil Nimmons, pianist Kenny Werner, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, trumpeter/ pianist Brad Turner, vocalist Neenna Freelon, saxophonist Campbell Ryga, guitarist/ arranger Bill Coon, vocalist Denzel Sinclaire, and trombonist/ arranger Hugh Fraser. While in college, Cherry had absolutely no life and spent countless hours sitting in a room, practicing saxophone (it's true!). She also studied flute, clarinet, oboe, piano, voice, and electric bass.

Cherry has spent some time working for Royal Caribbean International, playing saxophone/ flute/ clarinet onboard cruise ships as a member of a 9-piece orchestra. Working onboard ships has provided her with the opportunity to network and interact with people from all over the world, as well as travel to Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, the Caribbean, Alaska, Costa Rica, Mexico, Aruba, Hawaii, and Panama. Some notable acts (you may recognize some of these groups if you're old enough) she has performed with include: The Platters, The Coasters, John Davidson, Scott Record, The Drifters, Joey Van, and Brenda Cochrane.

Cherry makes her home in Vancouver and keeps busy doing studio recording work, teaching, freelance gigging, as well as writing and arranging.

At the moment, Cherry is focusing her energy on writing new material for her next project- her debut album on which she'll be singing, playing sax, electric bass, keys, and writing the horn arrangements. She hopes this next project won't break the bank, but she knows it's inevitable :)
